It's Time to Defund Obamacare

Earlier this week, thirty Republican Representatives signed a letter to their leadership in the House of Representatives seeking to defund Obamacare. None of the Republican Reps from either Missouri or Illinois joined their conservative counterparts in signing that letter. They chose instead to support the continuing resolution that spends money we do not have on programs we can not afford.

Senate conservative Ted Cruz (R-TX) has breathed new life into the defund Obamacare movement. As the Washinton Post reports:
Outspoken freshman Sen. Ted Cruz intends to offer an amendment to the stopgap spending plan under debate in Congress this week that would defund President Obama’s health care law until the nation’s economy grows at a rate in line with historical averages.
Roy BluntThat effort has picked up support from both FreedomWorks and The Heritage Foundation--both have key voted the Senate vote on that amendment. That means that Sen. Roy Blunt's (R-MO) vote on that amendment will be reflect in the score he earns from those organizations. Heritage makes the case for defunding it as soon as possible:
The most severe and damaging economic impacts of Obamacare have yet to occur, as they will come with the law’s full implementation and the implementation of its funding mechanisms in 2014. After that point, this law will be more entrenched and its damaging effects will be much more difficult to amend.
The Democrats control the Senate so even if the Conservatives unite behind Ted Cruz, it's unlikely that they will succeed.

#MOSen: Todd Akin's Visit to Columbia, MO

IMAG1589

IMAG1601 Earlier this week, Todd Akin announced that his campaign would be traveling the Show Me State by bus. Billed as the Missouri Common Sense Bus Tour, Akin is appearing at locations around the state with other conservative leaders.

The tour began Tuesday in St. Louis and will finish Friday in Kansas City. Stops along the way include Cape Girardeau, Joplin, Springfield, Jefferson City, and others. The pictures here were taken at the Thursday stop in Columbia, MO.

Akin got a boost earlier this week when former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, came to town to stump for him. On Tuesday evening, Senator Roy Blunt issued a statement endorsing Akin's Senate bid. The statement read in part:
Congressman Akin and I don’t agree on everything, but he and I agree the Senate majority must change. From Gov. Romney to the county courthouse, I'll be working for the Republican ticket in Missouri, and that includes Todd Akin

Voice your Support for Conservatism

RedState: The Most Important Fight For Conservatives in America:

Well, it was going to happen in January. But conservatives started gaining momentum. Naturally, Mitch McConnell had to go try to pull the rug out from under conservatives. Far be it for fresh ideas to enter into the hallowed corridors of Senate Republican power.
I’m talking about the Senate Republicans’ leadership fight for Vice Chairman of the Republican Conference. There is an election to fill that seat.
The election was to be held in January. The only declared candidate was Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin (HAFA Score 91%). But then Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri (HAFA Score 64%) announced this week he wanted the job too. Immediately after announcing his entry, Senator Mitch McConnell moved the election up from January to next week and began whipping votes on behalf of Senator Roy Blunt. [UPDATE: A McConnell staffer tells me Senator McConnell is not whipping for Senator Blunt. Actual senators tell me McConnell is whipping for Senator Blunt.]

Roy Blunt did a wonderful job beating Robin Carnahan, but there's a more conservative candidate in this race. Here's a list of Senators. Find yours and click on them to get a page with their phone number. Call and ask them to vote for that more conservative candidate: Ron Johnson.

A Laugh at Ann Wagner's Expense

Ann Wagner, left, Pays the Blunts for FEC Compliance*
I saw a picture over at Big Journalism with the sub-title: "Ed Martin, left, talks with Roy Blunt" and I just had to laugh. Roy Blunt's popularity among Tea Partiers and conservatives is pretty low, so Ed Martin probably doesn't want to be seen with him and certainly hasn't been seen with him recently. In short, the photo was a nice, subtle attempt to associate Ed Martin with Roy Blunt.

Of course, there are several reasons beyond Blunt's waning popularity why Ed Martin doesn't want to be seen with Missouri's newest US Senator. First, Roy Blunt has endorsed Ed's primary opponent Ann Wagner. Second, Ann Wagner chaired Blunt's 2010 Senate campaign. And third, Roy Blunt's daughter, Amy Blunt, works for the Bespoke Group and they provided "FEC Compliance" to the Ann Wagner campaign as documented above.

Given that Wagner's FEC statements have been in the news recently, I suspect that Roy Blunt was hoping to maintain a respectable distance. Who knows, maybe Roy would've been willing to be seen with Ed Martin simply to fabricate the illusion of separation between himself and Ann Wagner. Well, that's not possible now!

So, with that background, please enjoy my subtitle to the picture above once again: Ann Wagner, left, Pays the Blunts for FEC Compliance.

* I know the phrase "pays the Blunts" misses the mark, but that wording concisely conveys the irony of the situation, so I'm keeping it.

Godspeed Robin Carnahan!

Jake Wagman reports that Robin Carnahan (D-MO) will not seek re-election as Missouri's Secretary of State (SoS) in 2012. Carnahan has done little if any fund raising for the 2012 election so this is not a tremendous surprise. She was elected to the SoS position in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. Her 2008 re-election set a record for the most votes cast for a candidate in an election in Missouri (1,749,152).

In 2010 she was the Democrat nominee to face Roy Blunt (R-MO) for the US Senate seat vacated by Kit Bond (R-MO). She lost by almost a 15% margin. Her vote total in 2010 (785,719) was nearly a million less than what she had received in 2008.

I think state-wide runs in 2008 and 2010 as well as the drubbing at the ballot box sparked a bit of introspection that led to Carnahan's decision to bow out. A third state-wide run in the span of five years was just too much. For the record, I believe, Patrick Tuohey of the Missouri Record was the first to suggest that she wouldn't run in 2012.

I'm always encouraged to see career politicians like Robin Carnahan change jobs. I hope she is successful enough in the private sector that future dalliances with elected office will be unappealing to her.

Sarah Steelman: Tea Party Candidate?

Earlier this week, Sarah Steelman filed to run for US Senate in 2012 against Democrat Claire McCaskill. There's a strong presumption that former Senator Jim Talent—the man who lost to McCaskill in 2006—will also run for the Republican nomination. Talent is seen as the party favorite.

Steelman served as Missouri's Treasurer from 2005 to 2009. In 2008 she made a bid for the Governors office, but lost in the Republican primary. In a Talent v Steelman race for Republican nominee for US Senate, she would be seen as an outsider.

With that background, it's interesting to learn that the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has apparently promised Steelman that it would not endorse Talent. Dave at Missouri Scout reports on the NRSC and Sarah Steelman (paid subscription):
The NRSC was burned last year in primaries across the country. In Colorado, Nevada, Alaska, and Maryland [I think he means Delaware - ed.], its anointed candidates lost in each primary and the eventual nominee lost each general election. In other words, the NRSC’s miscalculations (and spending on losing primary candidates) may have cost them control of the Senate.
In short, the NRSC lost money on several primary races so it looks like they plan to keep their money out of Missouri's primary in 2012. I hope they stick with that plan. You might encourage them to do the same in your state.

That said, I have to take exception with Dave for referring to Steelman as the "Tea Party favorite". Dave isn't the only reporter to do that. Jeremy Jacobs of National Journal reported on Steelman's announcement earlier this week this way:
Second, the NRSC is showing a newfound interest in Steelman, a Tea Party favorite, who it shunned last year in favor of Roy Blunt.
Since Steelman did not run in the 2010 Missouri Republican primary for US Senate, it's odd to say that the NRSC shunned her. They certainly anointed Roy, but Steelman wasn't among the candidates that were shunned. Those would be Chuck Purgason (2nd in the primary, 13%), Kristi Nichols (3rd in the primary, 7%), and several others.

I don't understand why Sarah Steelman is being referred to as the Tea Party favorite. She's not. She may be by the time the election is here, but she's not the favorite yet.

There are basically two paths to becoming a Tea Party candidate. The first path is to show up, maybe speak at events, maybe lead a local Tea Party group, recruit others, and just generally participate in the Tea Party. That's the path that Ed Martin and Gary Fuhr followed. The other path is to do something heroic, something exceptional that clearly indicates your commitment to Tea Party values. Once you've done that, you probably need to do some of the things on the first path: speak, lead, recruit, and participate. Paul Curtman followed the second path. I also think that Lt Gov Peter Kinder went above and beyond the call of duty when he brought suite against the federal government over the healthcare law.

Those are the paths to becoming a Tea Party favorite. As of today, there are no Tea Party favorites for US Senate in Missouri. I look forward to learning more about all the candidates. For now, best wishes for a successful campaign to Sarah Steelman, Jim Talent, Chuck Purgason, and Kristi Nichols (assuming the last three decide to run).

Holding Roy Blunt to his Promise of Fiscal Responsibility

The St. Louis Tea Party issued the following press release this morning:
Senator-Elect Roy Blunt Faces First Test of His Term

(November 16, 2010) Just two weeks after defeating Robin Carnahan in the Missouri Senatorial race by a whopping 13 point blowout, Senator -Elect Roy Blunt is now posed with but one question: Will he hold true to his word?

On October 4, 2010, then-Candidate Blunt signed onto the Tea Party Treaty, thereby conveying the message that he understands the concerns of his constituents, as well as his duty to them. That being said, it is now time to put his ink-mark where his mouth is. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-South Carolina has pushed forth a challenge to the GOP for a 2 year moratorium on Earmarks. The ban, which looks to be voted on next Tuesday, is co-sponsored by 15 other Senators and Senator Elects. Blunt is not on that list.

With a fired-up base, burdened by a flailing economy amidst pork-barrel spending, Blunt will have to choose between the will of the people versus business as usual. Stakes are particularly high in this vote, as accountability has now entered into the formula. . .accountability Blunt chose to enter into.

St Louis Tea Party Coalition, along with Jefferson County Tea Party, Franklin County Tea Party and K & N Patriots (St Charles, MO), call Senator-Elect Blunt to task. These four groups are among the most active Tea Party Organizations in the St Louis area, with collectively, thousands of active members, and are signed to the same Treaty Blunt signed onto weeks ago.

Multipe calls made to the Senator-Elect’s office were not returned for comment. Interestingly, his Twitter account, which was highly active during his campaign, has seemingly gone inactive since his election. Despite the hundreds of queries and comments of outrage directed at @RoyBlunt, the message this blatant silence speaks to the constituents: “I lied. I got your vote. I will do what I want. Burn on you.”

Congratulations!

It's been a good night for conservative Americans with Republicans picking up at least 58 house seats across the country. While the GOP will not take control of the Senate, they have picked up 6 seats.

In Missouri's CD4, Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) beat Ike Skelton (D-MO). Statewide, Roy Blunt (R-MO) beat Robin Carnahan (D-MO) in a 14 point blow out. Robin still holds the record of most votes ever received by a candidate in a general election in Missouri—1.7 million in 2008—but with only 0.7 million in 2010, she's gotta be thinking that another million woulda been nice. Has there been a candidate in Missouri history who has lost a million voters in the span of two years? Wow. That's unreal.

I was puzzled when I saw polls showing Robin's unfavorable numbers at 53%. I never thought she was that unlikable. Obviously, the voters disagreed. Nonetheless, I just checked The Gematriculator and they confirm that the Missouri Secretary of State website (www.sos.mo.gov) is only 41% Evil. That's about the same as Robin's 40.5% of the vote. Things that make you go: hmmm......

Ed Martin's race against Russ Carnahan is in limbo with neither candidate conceding. I'd like to submit this tape as evidence in support of an Ed Martin victory before deciding the election:

There were some tremendous Tea Party wins in the Show Me State in races for the state house and senate. The names that come immediately to mind are: Gary Fuhr, Marsha Haefner, Brian Nieves, Paul Wieland... Paul beat Tea Party hater Jeff Roorda. On two occasions Roorda in open floor debate in the Missouri house denounced "tea baggers". Hey, Roorda, you've been bagged, so here's a sign for you:

Most importantly, the premiere Tea Party candidate, a candidate who is firmly committed to principals over politics, Paul Curtman won by 13 points in a Democrat district. He did this the old fashioned way: just knocking on doors one at a time. Here he is:

Polling News from Rasmussen and Gallup

Rasmussen's latest poll of the Missouri Senate has Roy Blunt in the lead:
The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters shows Blunt picking up 51% of the vote, while Carnahan, Missouri’s current secretary of state, draws 43% support. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and two percent (2%) are undecided.
Meanwhile, Gallup is reporting that the views of the GOP's ability to govern is similar to 1994 and 2006:
Polling on voters' 2010 vote intentions suggests Republicans are within range of taking back control of the U.S. House of Representatives and possibly the Senate. This is surely attributable to the decline in Americans' perceptions of the Democratic Party in recent years, although this has not been accompanied by a surge in positive perceptions of the GOP. Heading into the elections, Americans view both parties about equally unfavorably. This is yet another indication that potential Republican gains may not indicate a Republican mandate as much as a rejection of the Democrats.
That sounds about right. I think we could turn that into a winning campaign slogan: Vote Republican—they suck less!

Another Bogus Poll from Robin Carnahan

Back in August, Robin Carnahan (D-MO) was touting a poll that showed her tied 48-48 with Roy Blunt (R-MO). The demographic breakdown of that poll was 63% women to 37% men, so I tweeted the following:
@RobinCarnahan is tied with @RoyBlunt 48-48 http://bit.ly/akwwVf Congrats, Robin! What's your strategy for 63% women voters on 11/2?
24thState.com brings news that the polling situation for Robin Carnahan has not improved:
The Missouri Democratic Party is touting a new poll from Global Strategies Group claiming a statistical dead heat with Roy Blunt. Without having access to the anything other than the toplines, it would be difficult to say that the poll is accurate, but it does show Blunt with a 4% lead when leaners are included (which they should be, this close to the election).
I disagree with Editor on this one. Any topline that shows Jerry Beck (Constitution Party-MO) and Jonathan Dine (L-MO) pulling 3% each isn't credible in my opinion. The 2006 MO Senate race between Jim Talent (R-MO) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO) saw 96.9% of the vote go to the two candidates from the Republican and Democrat parties. Beck and Dine are fighting over three or four percent total between them. The poll has an error range of +/-4, but I maintain that those two were included in the poll to bring down Roy Blunt's numbers.

Editor points out another problem with the poll:
...it's important to know who exactly the Dems are getting in bed with. GSG was recently smacked on the hand with a $2 million fine for a pay-to-play scheme in New York. GSG is also the firm started by Steve Rattner, Obama's auto czar, who had to leave the position over the rumors caused by GSG's missteps. If the Missouri Democratic Party wants to brag that their internal polling is done by Global Strategies Group, a powerful New York firm referred to no less than the New York Times as "one of New York’s top consultants to corporations and other special interests," by all means run their pretty little press releases.

I'm sure connecting the Missouri Democratic Party to corruption, powerful special interests, and New York politicians like Elliot Spitzer is all in Ryan Hobart's game plan.

Roy Blunt's First Tea Party

Tea Partiers from the St. Louis area including St. Charles, Jefferson, and Franklin Counties rallied at the St. Louis, MO, GOP Headquarters on Watson Rd. The rally was partly to support Tea Party candidate Chuck Purgason (R-MO), partly in support of the Yes on Prop C initiative, and partly to disuade Michele Bachmann from endorsing Roy Blunt (R-MO).

Bachmann, who had been scheduled to appear at a Roy Blunt fundraiser, had to cancel late Friday after being admitted to a hospital for an undisclosed illness. Tea Partiers join mainstream Republicans in praying for a rapid and full recovery for this icon of the conservative movement. We need her voice back in Congress.

Purgason's campaign continues to revel in the results of a poll released Friday that shows the Caulfield, MO, Republican besting Robin Carnahan (D-MO) 56 to 44. The internals of that poll contain more good news for Purgason. In particular, he runs strong in Missouri's 7th Congressional District—Roy Blunt's district.

The 7th is easily the most conservative of Missouri's nine Congressional Districts. Roy Blunt won re-election in 2008 with 68% of the vote. Purgason out polled Carnahan in the 7th Congressional District 72% to 28%.

Purgason v Carnahan Poll

I just got this from the Purgason campaign:
PURGASON TROUNCES CARNAHAN IN GENERAL ELECTION

National Pollster Shows Chuck Leading Carnahan by 12 Points

Respected national polling agency Magellan Strategies has just released a poll showing State Senator Chuck Purgason as the clear favorite in November’s Senate race. The poll, which questioned 1234 registered voters in the state of Missouri, found that 56% preferred Chuck Purgason over expected Democratic nominee Robin Carnahan who received only 44% of the vote. The poll had a margin of error of only +/-2.79% and a confidence interval of 95%.

The poll was balanced, made up of 37% Republicans, 37% Democrats, and 26% Independent voters. Purgason bested Carnahan in every age group, as well as among men, women, and independent voters. All the data accumulated indicates that Missouri will be a safe Republican seat in the fall when Purgason moves on to the General Election.

This poll stands in sharp contrast to all recent polling on the Missouri Senate race which shows the state as a toss up. Just three days ago, Rassmussen released a poll showing Purgason's main opponent Roy Blunt leading in the race against Carnahan by only 6% with a +/- 4% margin of error and 95% confidence interval. In the Rasmussen Poll Blunt only garnered 49% of the total vote. This data reveals that if Blunt were to win the Republican nomination, the party would be in danger of losing the seat to Democrat Robin Carnahan.

When asked to respond to the poll, State Senator Purgason responded, "I'm not surprised with the results at all. Missourians are tired of these political dynasties. Integrity really does matter."
I sincerely believe that Purgason will have an easier path to victory in November than will Roy Blunt (R-MO). While this poll confirms my own bias, I have some concerns. The straight-up numbers for Chuck Purgason (R-MO) v. Robin Carnahan (D-MO), 56 to 44, tell me that Carnahan's upper limit is 44 and that "other" and "undecided" poll results rolled into Purgason. The pollster, Magellan Strategies, probably insisted each person polled choose either Purgason or Carnahan. Still, this is very good news for the Purgason campaign.

A Purgason TV Ad

It's an interesting ad. Hopefully it will sway a few votes to Chuck Purgason (R-MO) on August 3rd. Purgason is the leading challenger to Roy Blunt (R-MO) in the GOP primary for US Senate. The fascinating thing about the ad is the last line: "Paid for by Joe the Plumber and friends." I took that as a rebuttal of Tony Messenger (of the Post Dispatch) who suggested that Purgason was paying Joe the Plumber for the endorsement.

Purgason Takes His Message to the Masses

The fundraising news out today shows that Roy Blunt (R-MO) raised $700,000 more than Robin Carnahan (D-MO) in the latest quarter: $2.2M to Robin's $1.5M. Of course, Robin had six times as many donors: 30k to Roy's 5k. Chuck Purgason (R-MO) raised $10k in the same quarter, but has raised $15,000 already this month.

Purgason is taking his message to the voters. I received the following email from his campaign Thursday evening:
Here's another opportunity to Meet Chuck Perguson, Candidate for US Senate. Call in and ask questions, get to know him, or just listen in. Take advantage of this great opportunity to get acquainted with one of the most viable alternatives to the GOP Party Player and Washington DC Insider - Roy Blunt.
