Heating Up the Carnahan Family Farm

paul-hamby-08

Discovery News: Wind Farms Warming Texas:
New research finds that wind farms actually warm up the surface of the land underneath them during the night, a phenomena that could put a damper on efforts to expand wind energy as a green energy solution.
As I've reported before, the Carnahan family business is building tax-payer subsidized wind farms in Enhanced Enterprise Zones--land that has been specially designated for favorable tax treatment. Now that wind farms may contribute to the sacrilege of anthropogenic global warming, how will the Carnahans repent?

I see that Tom Carnahan abandoned the family farm.

Another Laugh at Russ Carnahan's Expense

Washington Examiner: CBO: Obamacare to cost $1.76 trillion over 10 yrs:
President Obama's national health care law will cost $1.76 trillion over a decade, according to a new projection released today by the Congressional Budget Office, rather than the $940 billion forecast when it was signed into law.
That reminds me of Russ Carnahan's promise to Missourian's back in the Summer of 2009:

It was funny when he made that promise based on the CBO's numbers back then and it's funny now that it's broken based on the CBO's numbers today. What an incompetent fool.

Towards the end of the video above, Kevin Jackson of the Black Sphere shouts out: "If it's so good, why doesn't Congress have to be on it."

Tom Carnahan Departs Taxpayer-financed Wind "Business"

paul-hamby-01

MOScout's political speculation yesterday caught my eye (subscription required):
The War Time Consigliore?...the Post-Dispatch [reported] that Tom Carnahan was stepping down of his Wind Capital Group (Read it Here) could only be read one way by St. Louis Democrats: the brother of Congressman Russ Carnahan is clearing his plate for the impending clash with Congressman Lacy Clay.
While the national political press and even the candidates themselves have been chattering about Russ Carnahan running in Missouri's 2nd Congressional District, MOScout has maintained for over a year that Carnahan would run in Missouri's 1st against incumbent Lacy Clay. That could setup something of a race war in the Democrat primary there. To mitigate the racial strife in that contest, I suspect that Aldermanic President and Carnahan crony Lewis Reed will support Russ while Mayor Slay sides with Lacy. We will see.

Let's get back to Tom Carnahan's departure from Wind Capital. I think Tom sees the writing on the wall that a nation drowning in debt can't afford to incur more on behalf of his economically unviable green energy boondoggle. Therefore, the marginal utility of Tom's political connections for raising capital is diminished in the eyes of his cronies and it's time for him to leave.

The real question is: does Tom Carnahan really believe in green energy? If so, he'll hold on to his minority stake as he anticipates greater future dividends than cynics like me forecast. If not, then you can bet that he'll flip that equity position as he launders that taxpayer-financed capital into cold hard cash that he can then donate to the politicians that will finance his next crony capitalist business endeavor.

Russ Carnahan: The Hatchet Man

Old and new windmills. Wind Capital Group. Photo credit: Paul Hamby
I recently blogged about the burgeoning crony capitalist business that is the Carnahan Family (Wind) Farm. That post concluded with the following quote from the MaryvilleDailyForum.com and then my own observations:
Should Wind Capital prevail [in their lawsuit against DeKalb county], the big losers in Nodaway and elsewhere would likely be rural school districts and small-town fire and rescue units.
While I certainly support smaller government, I do not think that the fat is to be found in rural schools or small-town fire and rescue, but it sure does make sense for the Carnahans to loot those generally Republican-leaning areas of the state to provide seed capital for the next revolution in their business cycle.
Sunday morning I remembered that Russ, Nancy Pelosi's lapdog, played a role last Spring in saving 30 St. Louis firefighter jobs. One wonders if Nodaway will enjoy the same largess from Washington if Tom Carnahan wins his lawsuit against DeKalb county. Will the residents of DeKalb be able to send the bill for their "rural school districts and small-town fire and rescue units" to their fellow Americans or is that a privilege reserved for cities like St. Louis?

St. Louis spends beyond its means and when it has to cut spending it's the teachers, firefighters, police, and other needed services that are put on the chopping block. Here's how the St. Louis Post Dispatch covered Russ Carnahan's "salvation" of those 30 union firefighter jobs:
ST. LOUIS • The city has won a federal grant worth $3.2 million, which will almost certainly spare 30 firefighter jobs from imminent layoffs.
The Department of Homeland Security notified Rep. Russ Carnahan's office this morning via e-mail.
"They've got the grant," said Sara Howard, Carnahan's communications director. "It means they've got the money for the jobs."
The St. Louis firefighters were so grateful that they gave Carnahan an "honorary hatchet":
At an ceremony planned for 11 a.m. today at Lafayette Fire Company No. 1, the St. Louis Fire Department will present Carnahan with an honorary hatchet, in thanks for his efforts that secured a federal grant earlier this year, preventing Fire Department layoffs following a bitter dispute over pensions.
This is the same Russ Carnahan that went to the shooting range and shot three bullets. Who shoots three bullets? And, knowing that, why are you giving him more weapons!?

How to Grow your Crony Capitalist Business

Wind Capital Group's wind turbines. Photo credit: Paul Hamby

In 2009 the folks at 24thState reported on Tom Carnahan's Wind Capital Group expansion plan:
In light of the news that the Carnahan family wind farm business plans on using $90 million in stimulus and a quarter of billion in loans to build their new project, emails poured in from around the state complaining about the way the company does business.
And the way it does business is a text book examples of how crony capitalism works.

When we think about capitalism and markets we think about supply and demand. In the case of wind power, the Carnahans realized that they needed to manufacture demand. That was done when a November 2008 renewable energy ballot initiative passed in the Show Me State. Over the coming years, the amount of Missouri's energy which must be supplied by renewable sources will gradually climb to 15% in 2021.

With demand manufactured by state fiat and paid for by Missourians in the form of higher energy bills, the Carnahans now have the business justification for building their wind farms. They do not, however, have the capitalist drive to put their own money at risk, so they seek government assistance to finance their new venture.

As the 24thState article at the top indicates, this was done in part by creating an Enhanced Enterprise Zone in Dekalb county. Fast forward to October of 2010 and we learn that the "business" is paying "dividends":
In 2005, Tom Carnahan was a lawyer, and his brother was just elected to Congress. In that time, the company Tom Carnahan formed has given over 100,000 to Democrats, including the campaigns of his brother and sister, as well as to Democratic Party PACS that also give to his brother and sister.
A few days ago, MaryvilleDailyForum.com reported that it was time to expand the supply of Carnahan political donations windmills:
It took about four months longer than predicted, but the Missouri Department of Economic Development has finally approved two Enhanced Enterprise Zones designed to attract wind turbine construction countywide as well as promote various other kinds of industrial growth in the Elmo-Clearmont-Burlington Junction area.
...
Wind Capital Group of St. Louis currently operates the county's only wind farm, which consists of twenty-four 2.1-megawatt turbines near Conception. Those machines are not included in either EEZ and are currently assessed at the full tax rate for real property.
As the MaryvilleDailyForum.com notes, the Enhanced Enterprise Zones reduces the property taxes that Wind Capital has to pay, that means that municipalities will have less tax revenue at their disposal. The article notes that there's a legal dispute between Wind Capital and the DeKalb County Board of Equalization about the market and assessed values of each wind turbine and concludes:

Should Wind Capital prevail, the big losers in Nodaway and elsewhere would likely be rural school districts and small-town fire and rescue units.
While I certainly support smaller government, I do not think that the fat is to be found in rural schools or small-town fire and rescue, but it sure does make sense for the Carnahans to loot those generally Republican-leaning areas of the state to provide seed capital for the next revolution in their business cycle.

Presidential Visit to St. Louis Draws Tea Partiers, Obama Supporters, and Ugly Words

The video above was shot and produced by POedPatriot. Here's an excerpt from his post about it:
During the President's recent visit to St. Louis, Martin Baker, GOP Congressional Candidate for Missouri District One, was confronted by Obama Supporters, one of whom called him an "Uncle Tom Ni**er".
SharpElbows also got some footage at the Tea Party protest across from President Obama's fundraiser with stimulus beneficiary Tom Carnahan:

Dana Loesch noted the hateful tone in her report at BigJournalism:
The St. Louis Tea Party was among various conservative groups and activists who showed up to protest at Forest Park, barricaded across the street from Tom Carnahan’s stately home. The event was organized by Gateway Pundit Jim Hoft, and began peaceful–so peaceful, in fact, that many families took advantage of the warm evening and showed up with their children as well. I brought my own with me to collect media, because I think it’s important for everyone, kids included, to participate in civics if they want and see their Constitutional rights in action.
The Gateway Pundit has several posts about the evening:
Van at Blogodidact gets to the underlying problem:
...vile name calling and threats are what we've come to expect from the hope and change set. Seems as if it's beyond the capacity of the proregressive leftist Obamabots to grasp that some people have different IDEAS, ideas which are not based upon the color of their skin, but that are determined by the content of their character... and their brains.

Missouri Democrat Party Leader Reflects on 2010 Breakdown

Missouri Record is reporting on an interview with Missouri's Democratic Party Chairwoman, Susan Montee:
In an interview with Jo Mannies, newly elected Democratic Party Chairwoman Susan Montee said, 'This year was really a breakdown in messaging.... We didn't talk about what makes state Democrats different from national Democrats or California Democrats.'
If Montee believes that Democrat messaging and not their job-killing policies are to blame, then I'll raise my glass in support of another self-deluded Democrat. And if she's serious and will prevent another fundraising visit from Nancy Pelosi to her low maintenance lapdog, Russ Carnahan, then I'll raise my other glass to that, too!

Redistricting Russ Carnahan out of a Job

RedState is running some Ideas for Redistricting:
if MO loses a seat eliminate MO-3 Russ Carnahan. Carnahan will probably run for LT Gov then Since LT Gov Kinder is going to vacate the seat to run against Governor Nixon. And I suspect he wants his Dad’s old Job as Governor. He will not challenge Nixon in a primary but it sets him up perfectly.
Are you kidding me? Russ Carnahan for statewide office? Russ's more conservative and less goofy sister just lost a statewide race. Between her successful 2008 race when she garnered 1.7 million votes and her 2010 loss when she got a million less (0.7 million votes) the Carnahan brand has declined. When the people take to the streets demanding more taxes and more spending, I'm sure there will be a surge of nostalgia for Carnahan profligacy, but don't hold your breath.

Oh, and Republican Steve Tilley is warding off competitors for the GOP Lt. Gov. primary with a war chest of $750,000+ on hand. Whoever runs on the Dem side is going to have to draw lots of donors. I just don't see Russ doing that.

Ex-con Jeff Smith Encourages Russ Carnahan to Tell the Truth

Jeff Smith missed this year's political season because he was spending time in jail for lying to the FEC. Smith lost a primary challenge to Russ Carnahan in 2004 and lied in response to an FEC complaint filed by Carnahan. After leaving jail, Smith offered some advice to Carnahan: Tell the truth:
In a touch of irony, Smith offered some advice for his one-time opponent, who now faces a Federal Election Commission complaint filed by [Ed] Martin that his campaign improperly coordinated a late-campaign attack against the Republican on a Web site run by former Carnahan staffers.

The allegations are similar to what Smith originally faced in an FEC complaint that had been filed by Carnahan against him.

'Several people forwarded to me the articles when it came out -- given the connection between the allegations this year and on the 2004 campaign,' Smith said. 'I don't have any knowledge about what happened. But I would encourage anybody responding to an FEC complaint to do so wholly and honestly.'
I blogged about Carnahan's late hit on Ed Martin about a week before the election.

Ed Martin Concedes

This morning, Ed Martin (R) called Russ Carnahan (D-MO) to congratulate him on winning last Tuesday's election. Martin has alleged voter fraud in the election; however, today he has acknowledged that to the extent that voter fraud occurred in Missouri's Third Congressional District, it does not account for the 4400 vote margin in the race. With almost 49% of the vote, Russ Carnahan will continue to represent the district.

Martin also updated his website with a post entitled election day review - final report which reads in part:
In the early hours of Wednesday, November 3rd we learned that a slim lead our campaign enjoyed disappeared in a surge of votes. At the time we understood that these votes were coming from as few as three precincts from the city of St. Louis. On its face this sudden end-of-night surge was suspicious. We understood that St. Louis had finished reporting. Mathematically, several thousand votes from a small number of precincts was implausible.

Given the history of St. Louis and the state of Missouri where our Secretary of State has refused to take responsibility for compelling local boards of election to purge voter rolls of ineligible registrants, voter fraud looms large in the mind of voters. A sudden wave of votes is easy to associate with an unscrupulous few who might have a few thousand votes on standby in case an election was close and their candidate needed help.

...

Since Wednesday afternoon we have learned that the votes were not from three to seven precincts in the City, but rather included unreported votes from the northwest precincts of St. Louis County encompassed by Missouri’s Third Congressional district. In light of this new information, the implausibility factor evaporates along with my concerns about voter fraud in that late surge. And, although I have concerns about other incidents and improper conduct on election day, I no longer believe these concerns are sufficient to continue our review of what has occurred or delay agreeing that this election is over.

...

Finally, after asking for input, we have heard from hundreds of citizens about problems with voting or voter registration. These problems are real and far too common – or so it seems. The heart of our republic is a voting system that works fairly, with regularity, and which inspires confidence. I fear that the legion of problems threatens the integrity of our voting system.

Our campaign was about empowering people to get involved in politics to change the course of our nation by stopping one-party rule in Washington. This has been accomplished by other victories even as we came up short. Our campaign also sought to instill confidence in the citizens that their voices and votesmatter. Mishaps and misconduct like we saw last Tuesday threaten this confidence. In the coming weeks and days, I will continue to seek to highlight the importance of protecting our voting system and will ask you to assist me in this effort.

Thank you to all and thanks be to God for the blessing that is the United States of America
Ed, thanks for running and best of luck in your future endeavors!

Ed Martin Update

While Russ Carnahan (D-MO) has claimed victory in Missouri's Third Congressional District, Ed Martin (R) has yet to concede. The News Tribune reported Thursday: "Republican Ed Martin is demanding an investigation of possible voter fraud after narrowly losing the election for Missouri’s 3rd Congressional District to Democratic incumbent Rep. Russ Carnahan."

At the close of Tuesday evening's election tally, Russ Carnahan was leading his three conservative opponents with almost 49% of the vote (99,016). Ed split the 51% of the voters that sought to return sanity to DC with the Constitution Party's Nick Ivanovich and Libertarian Steven Hedrick. Ed was a close second to Russ having garnered the support of nearly 47% of voters. Still, he trailed Russ by almost 4,500 votes.

That's a lot of votes to make up and Ed acknowledged that Friday morning on Jamie Allman's radio show on 97.1. You can listen to Ed's remarks from the third hour of Jamie's show. Ed comes on at about 3:45 and speaks for about five minutes:

(If the MP3 player above doesn't work, try this direct link.)

Ed's in a difficult position. Obviously, he doesn't want to be the next Al Gore, but as someone who worked to end voter fraud in St. Louis city, Ed feels an obligation to ensure a clean election. He's made three claims about Tuesday's election, but before we get into those claims, it is important to note that Russ Carnahan's sister, Robin Carnahan, is Missouri's Secretary of State. As such, she's ultimately responsible for election oversight and obviously has a conflict of interest in this instance.

Ed's first claim is that the seven-hour outage of the Secretary of State's voter verification system may have allowed ineligible voters to cast ballots. This allegation is supported by statements Jen Ennenbach of the St. Louis Tea Party Coalition made to the Daily Caller:
“We are also calling for an investigation into the Secretary of State’s office because we had an election judge come into the St. Louis Tea Party headquarters just to vent his frustration and let us know what was going on,” Ennenbach told TheDC.

Ennenbach said the election judge, who she wouldn’t name, came to her after having witnessed busloads of mentally handicapped service workers, who are ineligible to vote per their medical condition, cast ballots during the timeframe when the verification system was down.

“The judges could not strike the vote because the verification system was down,” she said.
And there's no dispute about the verification system being down. Missouri.WatchDog.org reported:
A piece of computer hardware failed on Election Day, preventing poll workers across Missouri from being able to access the central electronic database designed to verify voter registration information for part of the day.

One of the load balancers — a piece of computer hardware that manages Internet traffic by determining how requests are sent to servers — is to blame for the problems with the system, said Laura Egerdal, spokesperson for the Missouri Secretary of State.
That's an odd thing to have happen.

Ed's second claim is that it was inappropriate for recently appointed St. Louis City Board of Elections Democratic Chairwoman, Eileen McCann, to hire a security company with close ties to Congressman Carnahan. The only way that I see this as a problem is if they security company was hired to transport ballots. In the audio from Jamie Allman's show above, Ed mentions some politics within the Board of Elections that may be relevant.

Ed's third claim is that a late at night dump from seven city precincts delivered an astounding number of votes for Russ Carnahan; however, Ed has since backed off of this claim. Daily Caller article mentioned earlier also has this:
On Wednesday, Martin’s team originally said a last-minute surge of Democratic votes from seven precincts looked suspicious, especially after he was leading most of the night. Now, though, after further investigation, his team discovered that the Democratic surge was from more than just the seven precincts – and he said that surge looks reasonable.
With that acknowledgement, it's hard for me to see how Ed can claim victory. Nonetheless, voters who have been disenfranchised or whose votes have been diminished by fraudulently cast ballots need someone to stand up for them. That person has to be Ed because the voters lack standing in court.

In addition to those three, other claims have emerged including Ennenbach's claim above that a St. Louis election judge witnessed fraud. On Wednesday, 24thState.com revealed some details about ineligible voters casting ballots in Missouri:
That said, we did identify 31 cases of registered voters who were possibly ineligible. And we know 8 that voted, at least one of which was not eligible to vote and should be taken from the rolls. That was based on just two locations. Because we had no villain, we held off reporting the information until after the election, as our plan was to work with cooperative election authorities rather than making a scandal out of what was really a systemic problem.
Perhaps the most frustrating thing about this is the indifference shown by Missouri's Secretary of State. As 24thState reported this past Thursday:
Robin Carnahan has stated in federal court that it is not her responsibility to clean the voter rolls, despite the violence done to honest elections during the time Missouri ACORN was active. Well, if Robin won't do it, then the people will do what government can't or won't do.
Conservatives obviously see this as a dereliction of duty on Robin Carnahan's part. I guess Robin could make the argument that she's saving tax payers money by outsourcing her job. It turns out that a MissouriWatchdog.org report has linked the deceased in Kansas and Missouri to active voter lists; however, Robin still hasn't scrubbed the voter roles.

That's not surprising when you consider Mindy Mazur, Robin Carnahan's campaign manager and former chief of staff. Between those two stints working for Robin Carnahan, Mazur worked for the progressive America Votes where she advocated for, among other things: election day registration, allowing 16 or 17 year olds to pre-register, removing proof of citizenship requirements, removing registration barriers for felons, etc. According to Wikipedia, America Votes has offices in twelve states and the District of Columbia, including Missouri. If you're conspiratorial, you wont be surprised to learn that Robin Carnahan was backed by George Soros's Secretary of State Project in her 2008 campaign. Maybe George was looking for some early dividends on this investment in the form of a Russ Carnahan win.

Perhaps Ed Martin's complaints about voter fraud will amount to nothing. That would be the best outcome. Due to our legal structure he's the only person with standing to bring these complaints and hopefully force greater scrutiny. To those that would nay-say his challenge, I would respectfully point out that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.

Protesting Voter Fraud in St. Louis

Members of the St. Louis Tea Party (and two Russ Carnahan campaign staffers) assembled outside the St. Louis Board of Elections to protest voter fraud in the 2010 midterm election between Ed Martin and Russ Carnahan. The video above is from that protest.

Later in the day, Ed Martin's campaign held a press conference. I was unable to attend Ed's press conference; however, he issued the following statement:
Too Many Questions

Call for Investigation into 3 Main Questions

(ST. LOUIS, MO.) Nov. 3, 2010 –There are a number of questions surrounding the votes in Missouri’s 3rd district race. The people deserve to have these questions investigated and answered so they are assured our election process is fair and their votes are counted.

The three glaring factors which stand out involve the Secretary of State’s office, the sole decision of a newly appointed Democratic chair at the City Elections Board, and an unprecedented number of votes coming in late from the city.

The Secretary of State first of all is Congressman Carnahan’s sister, Robin Carnahan. She reported having irregularities and computer glitches early in the day. We have heard from countless voters who want those problems scrutinized. Many point out that the Department of Justice pursued, for three years, a case against Missouri for failing to clean up the process. “When filed in 2005, one-third of Missouri counties had more registered voters than voting-age residents. What's more, Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan,… contended that her office had no obligation to ensure individual counties were complying with the federal law mandating a cleanup of their voter rolls.” (Wall Street Journal, John Fund, July 8, 2010)

People also question the motive behind a newly appointed St. Louis City Board of Elections Democratic Chairwoman, Eileen McCann, hiring a security company with close ties to Congressman Carnahan. Special Services was called on by Congressman Carnahan to do security for him as recently as August 26th. Carnahan paid the company $1400 at that time which can be seen in a quick review of his FEC filing.

Then just before midnight seven precincts within the city and county delivered an astounshing late night dump of votes. In such a hotly contested race and with so many voters concerned it only makes sense to make sure in fact every vote counts. Since Missouri’s Secretary of State is in fact Congressman Carnahan’s sister it is suggested she recuse herself from the investigation and appoint an independent investigator to look into these three main points of question.

“The people of this district want to make sure their voices were in fact heard and I pledged to them that I would fight to ensure it happens. We need to make sure the election process was in fact fair and that the numbers are correct. I saw several issues in my time at the St. Louis City Board of Elections and serious issues like this should and need to be addressed,” said Ed Martin.

We have been hearing about voting irregularities from a large number of constituents and are looking into all of these matters. We ask anyone who may have witnessed any sort of questionable acts regarding votes, ballots and the general election that they contact our office.

Congratulations!

It's been a good night for conservative Americans with Republicans picking up at least 58 house seats across the country. While the GOP will not take control of the Senate, they have picked up 6 seats.

In Missouri's CD4, Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) beat Ike Skelton (D-MO). Statewide, Roy Blunt (R-MO) beat Robin Carnahan (D-MO) in a 14 point blow out. Robin still holds the record of most votes ever received by a candidate in a general election in Missouri—1.7 million in 2008—but with only 0.7 million in 2010, she's gotta be thinking that another million woulda been nice. Has there been a candidate in Missouri history who has lost a million voters in the span of two years? Wow. That's unreal.

I was puzzled when I saw polls showing Robin's unfavorable numbers at 53%. I never thought she was that unlikable. Obviously, the voters disagreed. Nonetheless, I just checked The Gematriculator and they confirm that the Missouri Secretary of State website (www.sos.mo.gov) is only 41% Evil. That's about the same as Robin's 40.5% of the vote. Things that make you go: hmmm......

Ed Martin's race against Russ Carnahan is in limbo with neither candidate conceding. I'd like to submit this tape as evidence in support of an Ed Martin victory before deciding the election:

There were some tremendous Tea Party wins in the Show Me State in races for the state house and senate. The names that come immediately to mind are: Gary Fuhr, Marsha Haefner, Brian Nieves, Paul Wieland... Paul beat Tea Party hater Jeff Roorda. On two occasions Roorda in open floor debate in the Missouri house denounced "tea baggers". Hey, Roorda, you've been bagged, so here's a sign for you:

Most importantly, the premiere Tea Party candidate, a candidate who is firmly committed to principals over politics, Paul Curtman won by 13 points in a Democrat district. He did this the old fashioned way: just knocking on doors one at a time. Here he is:

2010 Midterm Predictions

Ed Martin wins in a close one. I haven't seen any polling, so this is little more than betting on your favorite team to win.

For the past decade or three, only 1 in 10 blacks have voted Republican. I think that will change Tuesday. My conservative estimate (based on a PJTV poll) is 1 in 4 blacks will vote Republican. This will be the news story Tuesday evening and will cause significant problems for the Democrats over the next two years. Depending on where that 25% is distributed—it wont be evenly distributed and I think there will be areas of Georgia where Republicans get 33% or more of the black vote—depending on the distribution, Republicans may pick up some seats in close districts. Missouri's Third Congressional District (Ed Martin vs Russ Carnahan) might be one of them. About 9% of MO-3's population is black.

As I've said before, I don't think the GOP has done a very good job courting the African American vote. The establishment changes slowly, but if Republicans net 25%+ of the black vote on Tuesday, the Republican Party will notice and, hopefully, change faster.

Here are a couple of videos I've put together for fellow conservatives who happen to be black. The simple message is: "We want your vote. Vote Republican."

Time for Russ Carnahan to Pack Up and Get Out!

From The Blaze:
The group Pack Up and Get Out has a simple message for Dem. Rep. Russ Carnahan: pack up and get out. To make that message clear, it recently sent 300 boxes to the Rep’s St. Louis field office. When the office rejected the delivery, one of the group‘s representatives decided to confront the Rep’s staff.

Ed Martin Addresses the Hackman Charge

In the video above from SolidPrinciples, Ed Martin (R) addresses the Russ Carnahan (D-MO) campaign's "Hackman" attack, but let me first provide some background.... well, I'll let the left-leaning RFT provide some background [emphasis added]:
On August 27, 2007, reporter Tony Messenger of the Springfield News-Leader sent the governor's office a modest request under Missouri's Sunshine Law, which ensures that government records are open to the public. Messenger wanted copies of any e-mails that Martin had sent to a certain pro-life group during the previous week.

Blunt's staff responded that no such e-mails existed.

Messenger insisted they did. A source had already forwarded one to him. And he believed that it strongly suggested that Martin was mixing "partisan campaigning with the process of doing his state job," or working for the GOP while on the public dime.

Martin acknowledged writing the e-mail in question, but maintained — and still does today — that all of his correspondence was policy-based, and therefore legit.

In that case, Messenger argued, the documents were public record and had to be retained. Yet Blunt staffers insisted at first that none of their e-mails were public record. That's exactly why they were getting deleted.

Deleted? The media collectively gasped. "Memogate" had begun.

...

Blunt wrangled with the investigators for a year, then finally agreed to release the records free of charge. When reporters pored over them, they discovered hundreds of e-mails responsive to Tony Messenger's original request. Martin had deleted them — before, he says, the request came in — but they'd been retained on backup tapes.

"I did not, and I don't think anybody did think, that a normal request for Sunshine information required retrieval from the backup tapes," Martin later said in a deposition.

Interestingly, when Messenger finally got his hands on Martin's e-mails — the ones the governor's office fought so hard to protect — the worst he could write was that they were "questionably relevant to state business." The scandal, it turned out, had more to do with Blunt's resistance to releasing the e-mails, than their actual content.
Hackman is Russ Carnahan's marketing play on Memogate, but the irony is that the requested emails were released and they exonerated Ed Martin. It's a non-issue.

In the video above, Ed not only deflects the Hackman attack, but also refers to the fact that Russ Carnahan did not show up at a candidate forum in Ste. Genevieve, but sent a DVD recording to represent him. Honestly, Missouri's Third Congressional District should be better represented not only in Washington, DC, but more importantly in Ste. Genevieve, MO, and the man who will do that is Ed Martin.

Carnahan Plumbs the Depths of Clark's Law

You've probably heard the adage: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." That's known as Hanlon's Razor. There is a similar though profoundly different adage known as Clark's Law (named in honor of Arthur C. Clark): "Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice."

I believe that what we're witnessing with the Russ Carnahan's (D-MO) campaign and the smears from www TheRealEdMartin com is an example of that sufficiently advanced incompetence that is indistinguishable from malice. That's one reason I have not blogged about MissouriRecord's post about Russ Carnahan being in the same sort of legal jeopardy that sent Russ's 2008 primary opponent, Jeff Smith, to prison. I've taken the view that Russ deserves our presumption of innocence not only because that presumption is at the core of our shared American values, but also because his ham-handedness is without equal.

Over the past couple of days, 24thState.com detailed the connections between the smear and Russ Carnahan's campaign. The connections are sometimes indirect—laundered, so to speak, through third parties. Some highlights from 24thState include the sock puppetry of Victor Arango and Jeannine Dillon:
An Emmy award-winning journalist and an Edward R Murrow award winning journalist were reduced to leaving fake comments, anonymous diaries, and lame Facebook comments to spread a story. They couldn't use their contacts in media to push the smear, so they attempted to fake it online.
Then there's the timing of certain payments that may have gone to Michael Corwin (proprietor of TheRealEdMartin):
Note that $2000 is what Corwin says he was paid. If Stanford did indeed hire Corwin, and he was paid from the invoice, it seems the 120 day trigger for campaign finance violations was absolutely hit, and it calls into question the verbal statement from Corwin and the Carnahans that "June" or "last spring" was when they parted ways. The Carnahan campaign has to answer this. Did the research they paid for on August 5 concern information that led to the creation of TheRealEdMartin?
And the dubious connections to the Carnahan family blog FiredUpMissouri:
In short, you cannot post a diary at FiredUpMissouri without the express permission of an admin. A new user would have to be approved by Sean Nicholson or another admin to post. The site is tightly controlled.

The cosmopolatino account doesn't show up in the normal sequence. In fact, it doesn't show up at all. And there have been no postings or comments before or after that I could find. It was a single diary from an anonymous individual that spent days sitting in the latest diaries section of FiredUp. That's the perfect place for deniability.
Here's all of 24thState's coverage:
Given that Ed Martin has already filed one FEC complaint about Russ's self-dealing on the Crystal Ballroom, another complaint seems inevitable on this smear. That's especially true in light of the timing here:
Notice the date that video was posted: October 19th, 2010. Now notice the timestamps of these posts on Ed Martin's facebook wall from the Carnahan campaign's chief harridan, Teri Powers:

Again. Sloppy. Teri Powers knew about the smear campaign and simply couldn't wait for the video release and her ebullience got the best of her. This is the kind of incompetence that advises and serves Missouri's Third Congressional District in our nation's capital.

And, lest you think this is an isolated case of one bad apple in the well-oiled Carnahan machine, let me remind you of Javonne Spitz's arrest in 2009 and this past summer's firebombing of Carnahan's office by a former employee with a dispute over pay. The inmates are in charge of that asylum and have been for quite some time.

After all of that, my view has not changed since my last post on the smear:
The campaign of desperate Democrat Russ Carnahan has coordinated a smear on Ed Martin. The attack alleges that Ed Martin was complicit in shuffling pedophile priests around St. Louis Catholic Churches while he served at the St. Louis Archdiocese (www.therealedmartin.com). In the video above, Ed Martin, Marie Kenyon, and Rev. Bruce McCoy speak to the allegations. Marie is a life-long Democrat who worked with Ed at the Archdiocese. Marie makes the key point:
What was said about Ed in the video is simply not true. Anyone who knows the Catholic church knows lay employees have no say-so, no responsibility whatsoever in priestly claimants. They just don't.
If the claims of TheRealEdMartin are true, I believe that Ed Martin must step down. If they are false, then the Carnahan campaign must disavow them and apologize. Because Ed and Russ are necessarily biased actors on this very public stage, I would suggest a jury of their peers. Such a jury would consist of candidates and elected office holders in Missouri's Third Congressional District. Do the Aldermen of St. Louis stand by the charge that Ed Martin was complicit in pedophilia? Does Mayor Slay? Do the candidates for the state house stand with Russ or Ed on this?

Why hasn't the local media pressed them on this question?

Addressing Russ Carnahan's Pedophilia Charges

Ed's campaign has put out two press releases:
The real question is: who started the whisper campaign? We know that Corwin was paid by Carnahan, though he alleges that he no longer has ties. One wonders if the Carnahan propaganda organ, FiredUpMissouri, with their post from cosmopolatino coordinated with rotciv over at The Riverfront Times. FiredUpMissouri and RFT should publish the IP addresses to clear the air.

Update: It occurs to me that this is either the sort of thing that Ed Martin should be condemned for (if one thinks Ed's guilty) or the sort of thing that his accusers should be condemned for (if one understands how the Catholic church's hierarchy works and that Ed could not have played a role in priest shuffling). I'd like to ask politicians and candidates, both Republican and Democrat, who are members of the Catholic church in Missouri's Third Congressional District: Do you think Ed Martin was complicit or do you think he was smeared? And, if you think he was smeared, was the Carnahan campaign responsible for the smear?

Welcome! And thanks to Erick Erickson of RedState for the link! The Dems are desperate and they're trying to demoralize us. Don't let them inside your head. Here's a little caffeine for your eyes and ears (watch the videos at the link). If you or someone you know needs a little pick-me-up before hitting the bricks to canvas for a candidate or phonebank, these should help get you going:

Ed Martin Write-up in Riverfront Times

Photo: Jennifer Silverberg and Riverfront Times

Riverfront Times has an exhaustive bio of Ed Martin. Here's an important bit about his work confronting voter fraud in St. Louis city:
In April 2002, U.S. Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond, the Missouri Republican, brought an English springer spaniel onto the Senate floor in Washington, D.C. Making the case for national election reform, he wanted all to meet Ritzy. She'd been registered to vote in St. Louis.

The city had a bad reputation for voting irregularities, but the November 2000 election was truly a farce. Hundreds of citizens showed up to vote but found their names had been mistakenly dropped from the rolls. When a judge ordered an emergency extension of voting hours, a higher state court quickly reversed it — but folks kept voting anyway.

By the end of Election Day, Bond was pounding his fist on a lectern, declaring the whole thing "an outrage." Yet the problems persisted into the next year, when two prominent aldermen registered to vote — despite being dead.

In 2003, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial board blasted the Board of Election Commissioners as an "unconscionable mess," where patronage employees "who owe their allegiance to politicians have never been known for their devotion to long hours and hard work."

Enter Ed Martin.

He'd been busy since leaving the archdiocese, clerking for a federal appeals court judge, getting married, having a baby and practicing law at Bryan Cave. Governor Matt Blunt appointed him to chair the bipartisan board in May 2005.

Within three months, Martin and his two fellow commissioners had fired or demoted seven top staffers, including some Republicans. They refined the duties of those remaining with a clear message: Do your job, or lose your job. Martin also handed over evidence of voter fraud to the authorities.

Even Democrats who wouldn't dream of supporting Martin's current bid for Congress give him props for his tenure as chairman.

Jeff Rainford, St. Louis mayor Francis Slay's chief of staff, lauds Martin for recruiting able workers to get the trains running on time. By November 2008, Rainford observed, the board of elections was "like night and day" from its 2000 woes, which he finds ironic, given that it probably hurt Martin's party.

"Though he is obviously one of the most partisan guys around," Rainford says, "Ed still wanted the place run right, even if that meant more Democrats would vote."
Some would argue that top city Democrats are supporting Ed Martin against Russ Carnahan. Nonetheless, Ed's work cleaning up election irregularities and voter fraud is one of the reasons he's the hardest working politician in Missouri.

Russ Carnahan has Three Strikes Against Him

Rasmussen reports that Most Voters Oppose the Reelection of Anyone Who Voted for the Health Care Law, Auto Bailouts, Stimulus Plan:
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that most Likely Voters think their representative in Congress does not deserve reelection if he or she voted for the national health care law, the auto bailouts or the $787-billion economic stimulus plan. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
That's good news for Ed Martin (R) since his Democrat opponent, Russ Carnahan, has voted for all three.
